Every September, a fresh batch of rookies are picked up, microwaved by their coaches and thrust out into the magical wonderland that is university football. At the same time, a raft of rumours drift across the choppy seas of Britball with more than a hint of Chinese whispers about them.
In anticipation of the big kick-off in a few weeks, here are some of the best rumours we’ve heard over recent months. Sometimes, the truth is stranger than fiction.

Rumour: Bristol Barracuda have recruited a former Wisconsin QB
Evidence: We’ve gone all weak at the knees for an American QB already this year, so forgive us for being a little sceptical – fool me once, shame on you and so forth. However, unlike with the Ross Hill Affair (as it will henceforth be known), there’s more than just a sketchy page in a 2008 media guide to go on, with Clay Rust’s high school career chronicled on Hudl and a profile on the Badgers’ website.
Verdict: This one seems like it’s for true. Falmouth and Bath Spa (Cuda’s opening two opponents) had better watch out…
